Ian Chesterton/Barbara Wright
Who proposes, when, and how?
Ok so we’re thinking of one where Ian has been planning to propose to Barbara for weeks. He has the ring but can’t think of the right time. Barbara doesn’t like being embarrassed in public so it needs to be more private and he’s not sure how romantic she would like it.
He attempts to ask her in the kitchen but stumbles on his words and ends up saying ‘will you do me the honour…of going to the chippy with me.’
They go, and in the queue at the chip shop, Ian is quiet and going over and over the speech he has prepared in his head. He nearly says half of it to the guy behind the counter as he orders.
On the walk home, whilst eating their chips, they pass Totter’s Lane and both begin reminiscing about the past. They stand on the street where they left their car and look into the junkyard, what is left of it anyway. Barbara seems reflective.
Ian suddenly gets down on one knee. Barbara asks what he’s doing ‘you’ll get a tear on that trouser leg.’ But he carries on and tells her that the adventure they took together was always leading them here and that he hopes their next adventure is the adventure of marriage and family if she would wish to take the journey with him.
Barbara in shock drops her chips onto the pavement but runs into Ian’s arms in happiness. ‘Yes of course’ she says. ‘But how do you think we’d send the Doctor the invitation?’
