Favourite One era quotes/speeches/dialogue:

86. Vicki’s journey.

“Vicki, are you going to come with us?” Barbara.
“Oh I, I’d like to…yes, if you’ll have me.” Vicki, the Rescue.

“(To the Doctor) What for? What would I want to be back in their time for? I want to be with you.” Vicki, the Chase.

“(To Troilus) The main thing is…I belong here now with you - If you’ll have me” Vicki, the Myth Makers.

It’s beautiful that what she says to Troilus as she leaves the Doctor for good is very similar to what she said to the others when they asked her to join them in the Rescue. It’s a very sweet little ‘if you’ll have me.’ In the Chase, when Ian and Barbara were leaving she told the Doctor she wouldn’t want to be stuck in their time and she wanted to be with him. Not long later, it’s all changed and Vicki has grown up and fallen in love just like Susan did. Now her devotion lies with Troilus and not with the Doctor.

The Doctor takes companions and they change each other and they often think they’ll stay forever… but they don’t, and the Doctor gets someone new. Every time he has to open his heart to a new person, a stranger, knowing that they will eventually leave him too.

85. Cell scenes in the Myth Makers.

“You ought to be ashamed of yourself!” Steven.
“I don’t see why! At least I’ve done something towards getting us out of here, which is more than you have.” Vicki.
“And what chance have I had?” Steven.
“Anyway, I thought he was rather nice.” Vicki.
“Oh, you made that painfully obvious!” Steven.

Some of our favourite moments of this serial come from the dungeon scenes and the banter between Vicki and Steven. Vicki spends the time moaning at Steven for rescuing her dressed as a Greek rather than a Trojan and then he starts moaning at her for offering food to Troilus instead of to him. It’s lovely the way he teases her about her flirting with Troilus and the way she pretends it’s to help them escape when much of it is really just her actual flirting.  Steven says ‘your little boyfriend’, it comes across that he’s really jealous that Vicki is paying more attention to someone else other than him, especially since he came to rescue her and he finds out she doesn’t need his help after all. Think Steven’s a little put out by that.

We really wish this serial existed because the dynamic of Steven and Vicki is so special and we only have the Time Meddler to properly see them interact with each other- and that’s such a shame because they are a great team.

84.

(to the Rill) “You are different from us, of course, but at least you are intelligent.”The Doctor.
“Yes, what difference does it make what your form is?” Steven.
“Importance lies in the character and to what use you put this intelligence. We respect you as we respect all life.” The Doctor, Galaxy 4.

83. “You know, I’m beginning to like the idea of being a crew member on a time machine.” Steven.

“A crew member? You’ll be lucky! He’s the crew - we’re just the passengers.” Vicki.
“Yes, and both very welcome ones, my dear. Come along, come along! Come on, come on!” The Doctor, The Time Meddler.

We particularly like this quote because of the way in which the Doctor is around Steven.  The comparison between the way in which he treats Steven and the way he treated Ian and Barbara when they first arrived, shows how much he’s grown and changed.  Here, he is not just putting up with his stowaway, he actually values him and wants him around. He’s not afraid of opening his heart and allowing people in. He doesn’t need Susan’s help to mediate either, he respects humans a lot more.

82. Steven wants to know why the TARDIS hasn’t blended in to the surroundings like the Doctor told him it would.

“Do you wonder why I don’t believe you? You know that large rock over there looks exactly like a Police telephone box.” Steven.
“That is merely another technical hitch and the Doctor will repair it one day.” Vicki, the Time Meddler.

81.

“Their decision certainly surprised me, although it shouldn’t, I know. But it was quite obvious they intended to take the first opportunity of going back home.” the Doctor.
“Well, they weren’t getting any younger, were they?” Vicki.
“It’s lucky for you child, they’re not here to hear you say that! Good gracious me! You think they’re old? What do you think of me? Hmm?” the Doctor.
“You’re different, Doctor. Anyway we may land in their time one day and be able to talk over old times.” Vicki.
“Well, perhaps Vicki, perhaps.” the Doctor, the Time Meddler.

The wonderful opening scene of this serial has a great little heartfelt discussion about Ian and Barbara’s departure. It’s a short and sweet moment and we adore it that Vicki has this idea that they can go and visit Ian and Barbara again. And after that brief little talk about the past and their friends now gone, they are interrupted by a noise in the ship. The noise is Steven, meaning the future has begun, they are moving on and a new story has started without the two humans who showed him the way. He is now the only original member of that first team but that’s ok because he has learnt so much and he has Vicki and Steven with him to become his next family.

Favourite One era quotes/speeches/dialogue:

80. “I shall miss them. Yes, I shall miss them. Silly old fusspots.” the Doctor, the Chase.

Favourite One era quotes/speeches/dialogue:

79. “Look, I know we thrust ourselves upon you, but we’ve through a great deal together since then. And all we’ve been through will remain with us always. It’ll probably be the most exciting part of my life. Look Doctor, we’re different people…and now we have a chance to go home. We want to take that chance. Will you help us work that machine?” Barbara, the Chase

After Ian’s unsuccessful attempt at convincing the Doctor, Barbara tries to use her calming influence to get on the Doctor’s good side. She wants him to know how the adventures that he has shown her have made her and Ian become better people. She wants to flatter him whereas Ian insulted him, she even says ‘we thrust ourselves upon you’ so she is taking the blame rather than accusing him. But she also means the things she says, she will remember the exciting experiences and they probably will be the best things she’s ever done. But her and Ian are ready for a new chapter, they are not like him and they need roots.

Of course this still doesn’t convince the Doctor and it takes Vicki to win him over. The fact he has so much trouble letting them go, proves how special they are. If Vicki hadn’t been there, we wonder whether he would have forced them to stay with him or tricked them into staying, all because he couldn’t bare to see them leave his life.

Favourite One era quotes/speeches/dialogue

78.”Yes home! I want to sit in a pub and drink a pint of beer again! I want to walk in a park and watch a cricket match. Above all, I want to belong somewhere, do something, instead of this aimless drifting around in space.” Ian, the Chase.

A really great speech from Ian as he shouts at the Doctor to let him and Barbara use the Dalek ship to go home. Ian is furious and can’t understand why the Doctor is being so stubborn. He doesn’t realise that the Doctor simply does not want to say goodbye.

We always loved this speech because of Ian’s desire to just go back and do the regular things, which he does when he and Barbara get home and they spend time in London. It’s also nice to see Ian a bit angry. Usually he’s very irritated by the Doctor but not likely to yell at him, but here he yells at him that he hasn’t been very successful at getting them home. It’s been a long time since he’s blamed the Doctor for them still being in time and space. But here he needs to let out his feelings because this is his chance to lead the kind of life he wants; the kind of life that was taken away from him.

Favourite One era quotes/speeches/dialogue

77. “It’s three after twelve, Ma’am.” Morton Dill.

”…I really meant “what year is it”?” Barbara.
“What?! you mean you have different years here?!” Morton Dill, the Chase.

We find Morton Dill really cute and funny. When he tells Barbara it’s 1966 in Alabama, Vicki appears beside them and he tips his hat to her and repeats again that it’s 1966. Vicki just looks at him and is like…’uh..thank you.’ Morton Dill’s vocal range goes up drastically when he repeats that Vicki calls New York ‘Ancient New York.’

And who can’t help but smile when he asks the team if they’re making a motion picture and the Doctor’s like ‘who is this loon?’ and the Doctor ends up accidentally saying ‘aint’ instead of ‘isn’t’ and is quick to correct himself.

And then of course Morton’s reaction to the Dalek is priceless. He laughs hysterically and then asks him why he’s come over in blue spots whilst talking into the plunger. The dark sides of us have our own head canon where the Dalek killed Morton Dill for mocking him, that or it kidnapped him for experimentation and found him so stupid that he booted him off the ship or turned him into a Robo-man. Though we are pretty happy with the way it turned out with him surviving as he is a sweet man, unfortunately it looks as though he may have been carted off to the asylum straight after the scene.

Favourite one era quotes/speeches/dialogue:

76. “Doctor, how can you sit there eating when Ian…” Barbara.

“Oh, my dear, you think I’m being callous do you?” the Doctor.
“Yes I do!” Barbara.
“Then I think it’s pure supposition that they’ve been caught by those Mire Beasts. After all, we weren’t, mm? You haven’t much faith in Ian’s infallible self-preservation, have you? Mmm?” the Doctor.
“I’m sorry” Barbara, the Chase.

Poor Barbara is distraught when there is an explosion in the tunnels on Aridius. The explosion could very well mean that Ian has been killed and she seems so unable to go on and is so tired. Barbara even has a go at the Doctor for not taking the situation seriously when he tucks into the local cuisine. But the Doctor trusts in Ian’s abilities and seems convinced that he and Vicki will be ok.

The Doctor never seems to worry about these sorts of things until they actually are presented in front of him, until he sees that Ian and Vicki are dead…he won’t believe it. Barbara tries to share that optimism but ultimately the ‘not knowing’ leaves her feeling lost and alone. The Doctor notices Barbara is tired and lets her sleep. She rests against the wall, unknowing that above her on the ledge is unconscious Ian.

We always wished in this scene that Barbara would have reached up and Ian’s hand would have reached down and they would have touched hands softly not knowing it was the other. But that’s just the romantics in us. And the scene is a lovely one anyway.

Favourite One era quotes/speeches/dialogue:

75. Beatlemania.

“Now you’ve squashed my favourite Beatles!” The Doctor.

But Vicki, I had no idea you knew about the Beatles?!” Ian.

“Of course I know about them. I’ve been to their Memorial Theatre in Liverpool.” Vicki.

“Well, they’re marvellous, but…I didn’t know they played classical music!” Vicki.
“Classical music?!” Barbara.
“Get with it, Barbara! Get with it! Styles change, styles change!” Ian, the Chase.

- Awesome scene with an awesome team.  We always loved the idea that the Beatles connect our travellers together. Perhaps Susan first showed their music to the Doctor who now can’t help but bop away to the beat. Vicki sees them as an historic relevance but also we found it just adorable that she used her turn on the time and space visualiser to show something that would make Ian and Barbara excited and connect them to their own time.

Then there’s Ian and Barbara who we think both bought the Beatles first record on the same day and told each other about it at Coal Hill. And Ian likes to think that he’s the one who’s ‘with it’ even though he’s standing in that stripy shirt and dancing along like an embarrassing Dad. Also the ‘squashed my fave Beatles’ line is improvised so that’s even more reason to love it.

Favourite One era quotes/speeches/dialogue:

74. “Four separate journeys. Four choices, that led all the time, closer to here.” Barbara.

“You’ll be a fool if you kill me. You will achieve nothing.” Lobos.
Possibly, but it might be enjoyable.” Ian.

“Well you can’t just accept it! We’ve got to help them! Well, sitting here planning and dreaming of a revolution isn’t going to win your planet back.” Vicki.

“The least important things sometimes, my dear boy, lead to the greatest discoveries.” The Doctor, the Space Museum.

Favourite One era quotes/speeches/dialogue:

73. “But these are amphibious creatures! You are not an amphibian!” Lobos.

“Oh! I’m not, am I?! Hmm?” the Doctor, the Space Museum.

The Doctor tries not to let the Governor get the better of him by displaying his outrageous sense of humour when he is restrained and his mind processed. He uses the thought selection machine in his favour as he fills the screen with his thoughts of friendly frolicking seals and himself in a Victorian bathing suit .

A scene which really showcases that the First Doctor is very funny and not just as he is labelled- ‘the grumpy old man.’ And the look of pure glee and joyful one-upmanship is one of the best parts of the serial.

Favourite One era quotes/speeches/dialogue:

72.

“Well which way? Have you any, er, particular fancy?” Ian.
“The way we came in, of course!” The Doctor.
“And which way was that?” Ian
“Your memory is like a sieve, dear boy! We turned right and then left.” The Doctor.
“No, no, we turned right when we came in.” Vicki.
“No, we turned left when we came in.” Ian.
“Well actually, all the doors and corridors are exactly alike.” Barbara, the Space Museum.

A wonderful moment in episode two. The team are lost, confused and trying to find answers and this little exchange of dialogue always manages to make us smile. The four of them all seem to have their own opinion or way of doing things and are like a family who are lost on a holiday. Ian is being irritable because he wants to remember but can’t, Vicki is convinced she is right and is smug about it, the Doctor mocks Ian’s memory and Barbara tries to diffuse the situation by adding her own conclusions.

It’s just all rather amusing seeing them squabble over directions and who is right. Of course the Doctor sides with Vicki, leaving Ian and Barbara sensing favouritism in the group. Eventually though they all have a good laugh about it.
