BARBARA: Well that’s where we’ve been wrong. Originally, the machine wasn’t at fault, we were. And it’s been trying to tell us so ever since.
IAN: A machine that can think for itself?
The Edge of Destruction. The first story to be set entirely on the TARDIS.
IAN:…Any reasonable human beings would have responded to him. The Daleks didn’t. They obviously think and act and feel in an entirely different way. They just aren’t human.
GANATUS: Yes, but why destroy without any apparent thought or reason? That’s what I don’t understand.
IAN: Oh, there’s a reason. Explanation might be better. It’s stupid and ridiculous, but it’s the only one that fits.
ALYDON: What?
IAN: A dislike for the unlike.
The Daleks. The Doctor encounters what is to be his greatest enemy.
Under a cut because there’s loads of them.

An amazing sequence that makes good use of the lack of space as Barbara gets lost in the Dalek city. You get such a sense of how claustrophobic it is as she actually puts her hand across the camera lens.
With all the curved doors, and all the lifts and metal walls, you get a complete image of the horror as Barbara becomes lost in this metal maze. And then just as she heads down yet another corridor, she sees the threat…and all the audience have is that singular plunger appearing in shot.
If you’d never seen a Dalek before, didn’t know their history and what they are, then this would have been quite exciting. Heck it’s exciting when you do know! and it was this scene that hooked the viewers, pulled them in and made them want to watch to find out what happened next. It was a brilliant cliffhanger and so well filmed. One of our fave moments in all of Doctor Who ever!
