Ian’s tie.
Ian’s last connection to home and his job at Coal Hill is severed when the Doctor destroys his school tie to check if the pool is acid. But poor Ian as he looks at the damaged tie and then throws it away unhappily. To the Doctor it was just any old tie but for Ian it’s a reminder of his old life.
