3) Favourite companion and why?

I feel like a bit of a cheat for this but it’s an honest answer at least; I can’t choose between Ian and Barbara. I love them both equally and for similar reasons. Mostly I think what I like about them both is how remarkably ordinary they stay throughout their run on the show. You never forget that they were just two school teachers who got swept away by a lunatic old man on a mad adventure. They keep you grounded in reality. Ordinary people who are capable of extraordinary things but always within the realm of believability.

I liked that they provided some nice character conflict with The Doctor. I liked watching him grow because of them. I liked watching them learn to love him. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about that relationship and thought the show navigated it wonderfully. Ian and Barbara are both just really, really likable I guess. They’re brave and intelligent but also fallible. I suppose, if I’m being honest, they’re my favourites because I find them the most relatable. It’s that constant normalcy no matter how alien or bizzare the situation they’re in. They make me believe it, if you know what I mean? For half an hour at a time I can switch off my cynicism, turn into an over-excited eight year old, and believe in Menoptra, Daleks and Sensorites. Believe that a grumpy old alien, with a little help from my two heroes here anyway, is always going to save the day.
