I’ve started to watch Classic Doctor Who from the very beginning, just for the experience, and I’m half way through the whole ‘Keys of Marinus’ story. I’m on ‘The Snows of Terror’ and am I the only one who’s wondering where the hell The Doctor has disappeared off too? He’s just… not there, and no one seems to mind. Did William Hartnell go on Holiday!? Questions!
William Hartnell was indeed on holiday during that story. He comes back for the last two episodes. It’s because at this time DW was recorded like all year round and they had to be written out of the odd episode just to get a break from the busy schedule. If you keep watching you may notice that in the next few serials the others take it in turns to take a little break and are either missing entirely for one or two eps, or are only there from pre-filmed odd scenes.
Very tricky for the writers because sometimes they were only told last minute to write out a certain character for a week. So that’s why the Doctor went off ahead of the others and disappeared suddenly in that story. Ah the perils of 60’s TV filming! :)
